SLANG
By Ella Wehlita
What poor overworked words our
slang expressions really are. Every
day its expressions change in value
and meaning.
No wonder our foreigners have
such a hard time trying to learn
English. In this sense, our language
is so rich that no one can ever ex-
pect to learn all of it.
If you realized what the original
meaning of an expression was, you
certainly wouldn't use it. If you
realized what incorrect English it
was, you would reduce the amount
of it that you use. If you ever once
thought that by learning slang you
were really impoverishing your per-
manent vocabulary you would stop it;
but if you should have anyone tell
you that it showed disrespect to
Christ and His teachings, you most
certainly wouldn't use it. Above all, it shows your lack of
refinement and education. It is a
great inconvenience and hindrance
in business. In fact, it greatly de-
tracts from the weight, dignity and
influence of what you say.
Every time you come to a new lo-
caliy you must learn all the new
expressions in vogue. What a tire-
some habit. How foolish to spend
time acquiring such useless know-
ledge; for it certainly will do you no
good, unless you plan, sometime in
the future, to compile a dictionary of
slang.
Let's think of what a bad habit
it is. It's like a contagious disease,
worse than other habits because it
not only affects ourselves but other
people. For the sake of the future
people of Cordele, let us try to drop
this bad habit.
Help us wage a mighty war against
slang. We are sure to win with every
one's cooperation.
