Monday, June 18.
The Alien Bill underwent a discussion, but no question was taken on it.
The message from the President, covering the Dispatches from our Envoys, was received. [On motion for printing it, after some conversation, on the circumstance of Bache's having published it, before the President could communicate it to Congress, 10,000 copies of all the Dispatches received from our Envoys were ordered, that the public universally may be put in possession of them.]
Tuesday, June 19.
The discussion of the Alien Bill occupied the principal part of the day.
A motion of Mr. Gallatin, to give the bill a go-by, was negatived 46 to 36.
Wednesday, June 20.
The Alien Bill underwent another full discussion, was amended, and ordered for a third reading.
The privilege of franking letters was extended, by an act, to the Secretary of the Navy.
[A message from the Senate announced, that that body had passed, The additional Provisional army bill, The bill authorizing arming merchant vessels, (with amendments) and the Armed galleys bill.]
The new regiment of Artillerists appropriation bill, passed to be engrossed.
A bill providing for the enumeration of the inhabitants of the United States was taken up in a Committee of the Whole, progress made, and leave given to sit again.
