On Friday last, at half past 2 P. M. a Fire was discovered in the hay loft of the barn of the Hon. Judge Pickering, in Market-street, which consumed the same, and had it not been for the most vigilant and spirited exertions of the fire-wards, engine companies and citizens, together with a great number of country people then in town, the fire would have communicated to the adjacent combustible buildings, and made the most serious and distressing ravages. But we have great reason of thankfulness, that the day was so calm, and water and assistance so timely.
The inhabitants of this town return their sincere thanks to their country friends, for their spirited and manly exertions during the conflict.
A CARD.
C Henry Haven thanks the citizens of Portsmouth and others, for their spirited exertions in extinguishing the Fire which threatened the demolition of his house on Friday last.
