Among the thousand charges which have been made against the administration, we are not astonished at the blows which have been levelled at the Secretary of War.

We deem him fortunate, indeed, that so few attacks, comparatively, have been made upon him. Whom has the ruthless spirit of the whig presses spared? What prominent democrat has escaped the abuses of a factious opposition?

But there is one attack upon Mr. Marcy which is so extravagant, from its violence, that it amounts almost to a burlesque. We find it in the Buffalo Republican. Is there a man in Washington acquainted at all with the political movements here, who does not listen with astonishment to such charges as these-that Governor Marcy has said "that it was decided in a cabinet council that he should have the control of all appointments under the general government in the State of New York?" The assertion is of course without the slightest shadow of foundation. We almost scorn to say that the President has come to no such decision, and that the Secretary has never made such a declaration, and that he exercises no such power.

Who believes "that he has been continually laboring, since he has been a member of the cabinet, to favor his own ambitious views?" The whig journalist blindly goes on to ask, "Is there any one so blind that he cannot see, in all his manœuvres, a settled determination to make his way to the presidential chair? Why else should he have turned the whole patronage of the administration against the great favorite, not only of the democracy of this State, but of the whole nation?" &c., &c.

Now, we do not hesitate to say that all these speculations are the miserable offspring of a morbid imagination. If there be a man in this nation who does not aspire to the presidential chair-who has no such ambitious views as are here attributed to him-we undertake to say that William L. Marcy is that man. Of course the jealousy which he is said to have entertained towards Mr. Wright, had no existence. He never "employed the patronage of the administration" against him. The whole story is a fable; and, what is more, the opposition which is here insinuated to have been felt by any member of the administration towards that distinguished man is totally unfounded.

But this we will undertake to say, that, admitting Mr. Marcy had those feelings towards Mr. Wright-that his ambition did require such a victim, and that he had the power ascribed to him, he has shown a magnanimity which does him honor. How many offices could we enumerate which have been conferred on or offered to the barn-burners, as they have been vulgarly called! But we will not undertake the task. Sufficient it is to state that the charges of the "Buffalo Republican" are false, and really unworthy of the notice which we have already taken of them. We dismiss it with all the contempt which it deserves.
