Rivers Wants Lumber
Processing Done in Alaska

WASHINGTON, (P) - A revision of Forest Service policy requiring primary manufacture of lumber in Alaska was recommended today by Representative Ralph Rivers.

Rivers said he considers the policy of prohibiting export of unprocessed logs from Alaska a necessary protection to the state's mill operators and workers.

"However," he said, "it is apparent that Alaska, a state rich in natural resources, can progress economically only on the basis of realistic and workable resource policies which stimulate rather than hinder export of raw materials."

The Forest Service informed Rivers that the output of Alaskan sawmills now may be exported provided the logs have been reduced by a headsaw or gangsaw.
