Event Details

The nine Negro children attending Central High School under federal protection are taking a short holiday this week. They entered the former all-white school on September 25 escorted by the 101st Airborne Division after President Eisenhower sent troops to enforce a federal court integration order against Governor Faubus's use of the Arkansas National Guard to block them. Federal forces ensured compliance, leading to reluctant acceptance by locals. Some troops were withdrawn, leaving federalized Arkansas National Guard to protect the students. Initially, students were escorted from a central point; later, they went with parents or friends. Laxity in guards made situations difficult, but integration continues. Minnie Jean Brown, one of the nine, was suspended Tuesday for spilling chili on a white student.
