R. KING, Esq.—Dear Sir: I consider that the Democratic Convention of St. Mary's county have, by a system of juggling and log-rolling, inflicted upon the rights of the democratic voters in Chaptico district, in my person, a great wrong and injustice. The voice of the people was solicited by that convention as to the persons who should be selected to hold the several offices in this county. I was a candidate prior to the election by primary meetings for keeper of the Light House at Blakistone's Island—others for the same place. The claims of all were canvassed before the people, and, at the election for delegates, gentlemen who were supposed to be favorable to my appointment were elected. This did not suit the defeated candidates, who contested the seats of those who were my friends, and, by a system of intrigue and combination, my friends were over-slaughtered because they were firm and honest in carrying out the views of the people who sent them there—they, therefore, very properly withdrew from the convention, and left the so-styled secret convention holding an inquest on the body of the democratic party in the grand jury room of the Court House, with the bailiff of the Court as sergeant-at-arms to carry out their purposes. My friends offered every proposition, but none would be accepted. I have worked hard for the democratic party—my labors by day and by night, my purse and what I have, have always been given to the support of that party, and with what effect let the great defeated candidates who were beaten among their own persons. After my friends were so shamefully treated, no office this Convention could confer would I have, and if General Pierce is informed of its proceedings, conducted in secret, and ending in wrong, their batch of appointments would find no favor at his honest hands. I consider this wrong as one which the democratic party of the county should stamp their foot upon, and that the whole party of the County should condemn this secret convention and their appointers, and that every democrat in the county is now free to apply for what place he may wish, without the endorsement of the junto of Twenty-three.
