Full Text
The Susquehannah, opposite this town, is now, for the fifth time this winter, closed, and passengers are continually crossing on the ice. Never, perhaps, was there a season more changeable.—Many great and sudden changes have taken place. On Monday morning last our ears were charmed with the voice of birds, tuning their notes along the borders of the Susquehannah, whose smooth surface resembled more the appearance of May than that of February. The succeeding day presented quite a different scene—" the tuneful tribes were struck dumb," and the gently rolling waves ceased to move, encrusted by an icy coat of mail, whilst the chilling winds blew in hollow blasts, and all animated nature seemed to tremble beneath the wintry storm. To like changes is human life subject. To-day we may revel in the sun-beams of joy and mirth—to-morrow may consign us to the dreary abodes of wretchedness and despair. But, notwithstanding all the changes in the weather, we are rejoiced to perceive health stamped on the faces of our ruddy fellow townsmen. May we duly appreciate our privileges.
