ICE-BOUND SHIP LIMPS INTO PORT

"It's a long time since the ice has bothered us so much as it has this winter," declared Captain F. G. Hawx, of the schooner Eva C., after he had entered the vessel today in the local customs house.

He was due at Elizabeth last Monday, but did not get in until yesterday morning. For nearly forty-eight hours he had been stuck in the ice in Long Island Sound, off Faulkner's Island, he declared, and the delay spoiled his attempt to make a record trip from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

"Coming down along the Nantucket shoals," said Captain Hawx, "we struck lots of loose ice, but it did not bother us much. About midnight last Sunday we got stuck in the sound after we had been working hard for hours and making little headway.

"We got in so tight that the bow of the Eva C. was badly scratched up. Then we managed to turn around, and before we got into clear water again my men had to drop off and chop us loose with axes. That's how we got out as soon as we did. As the men chopped up the ice we went ahead a little and finally got free. But if we had not been compelled to turn around to Montauk Point and come down that way we'd have made dandy time."

The Eva C. has been engaged in the general freight business for a number of years. From Newark she takes a load of coal to Lunenburg, N. S., and from the latter place brings a cargo of lumber for this city.

Another schooner, the James William, had been his companion part of the way down, said the captain, but he had lost sight of her during his own troubles with the ice.

"I think she must be stuck yet somewhere along the line," he said.

The James William is also due for this port and sailed from Lunenburg on February 5 with the Eva C.
