BALTIMORE, Sept. 11.

THE ENEMY

Early on yesterday morning, intelligence was given from the observatory that the enemy's fleet were in full sight passing up the bay the number could not be distinctly ascertained from the haziness of the weather.-- The military, and amongst the rest, the fifth regiment, who had before so gallantly distinguished themselves, assembled at an early hour and were dismissed until 5 o'clock, with orders to hold themselves in readiness if the alarm was given from the fort. About half after one P. M. 3 guns were fired from the fort, the signal of alarm, when the military en masse repaired to their respective posts to wait the enemy's arrival. Intelligence has just arrived that three large ships may now be plainly seen approaching the fort about 3 miles from the city--that about 16 or 17 sail were seen, some at anchor, and others still under a press of sail. Should Congreve rockets be thrown into the city, we should recommend to every house-keeper to have a servant ready with buckets filled with water to extinguish the flames.

At sun-down 30 sail of square rigged vessels below--3 frigates seen from observatory between North & Sparrow's Point--2 sloops of war and 10 transports within the bar, 3 frigates 2 miles below at anchor, 4 frigates standing in abreast of N. Point with 8 sail, supposed transports.
