Yesterday a few Gentlemen in this town made a great feast for the Poor.—There was a general invitation of all the objects of this liberality, besides a special invitation of many. A hog of 120 lb half a sheep, and a lamb, were barbecued, and other provisions made ready. The entertainment was made at a pleasant place called Carpenter's Point, at a small distance from the town. A number of poor persons appeared, and behaved with great sobriety and decency. They were first seated, and plenty of good provisions, dressed in the best manner, was set before them, and after invocation of the Divine Majesty for a Blessing, they were served by the authors of this charity, and other Gentlemen and Ladies of distinction. Afterwards the rest of the people who were present dined.— A number of Gentlemen, being well wishers of the design, came voluntarily to this entertainment, bringing with them such supplies for the furtherance of the good work, as they thought would be for the comfort of the poor, and their own refreshment. The whole was conducted with prudence, modesty, cheerfulness and order; and at evening each returned home in peace.
May the foregoing Example induce others to make a Feast now and then for those that are really the poor, sober, distress'd Part of Mankind, who perhaps are seldom comforted with a Glass of good Wine for Years together.
