Three Too Many
While there should be tendered to those responsible, a vote of thanks, for such a marked cut-down in week-end tragedies, it must be admitted that three tragedies were entirely too many.
Beginning with the closing days of the week, it was shown conclusively that the warning sent out July the 4th., must have borne fruit.
The governor of the state became aroused at so much recklessness on the highways, netting a toll that made no contribution whatever to our regard for law, life and limb, he called upon the department of safety to get results. His citation of hiding behind persimmon trees and what not did have its sentimental values and whether the patrol took refuge behind persimmon trees or some other brand of tree, such a move was effective.
Sorrow was brought to the door of our neighbors in this city because of the death of a young woman in the bud of life who was killed near Cartersville, Georgia on July 4th. This tragedy brought in close focus to many of us whose acquaintance sent out words of condolence, should so arouse us as to carry on an extensive campaign in the interest of safety on the public highways. Of course in referring to this local tragedy we do not mean to infer as to who was responsible. We mention it only to point out how close tragedies can come.
With improved conditions in highway building, with the widening of the old roads, there should be a marked decline in highway fatalities. The figure should continue to dwindle into disappearance.
The cooperation with all concerned should bring about a handsome result in this week-end casualty list.
Coming closer to us, let it be said that the suggestion barely removed this tragedy from many of us. But for the grace of God it might have been in our own families.
We will keep up the fight. We will enlist in this vital cause to do our bit in that education and ethical practice that should continue to get results in these week-end tragedies.
