With the endorsement of Senators Bailey and Hoey, Solicitor Donnell Gilliam of Tarboro will, in accordance with long existing precedent, receive President Truman's nomination for federal judge in the eastern district over which Judge Isaac M. Meekins of Elizabeth City presided so long and so well.
That President Truman will send in his nomination is indicated by the fact that Senators Bailey and Hoey let their recommendation of him be known only after they had conferred with the President.
Mr. Gilliam has been in public service many years. For more than twenty years he has been solicitor in the Second Judicial district and for twenty-nine years chairman of the Edgecombe County Democratic Committee. He is widely and favorably known in the Old North State.
In their letter to President Truman, written after the White House conference, in which they urged his nomination, Senators Bailey and Hoey declare 'he will maintain the great tradition of our federal bench.' In adding 'his appointment will be accepted with gladness by the people whom he will serve as judge,' they have struck a popular note.
