To our Patrons.
We send you the Star this week in the same dress that it has worn from the beginning; yet its character has changed, it has gained the liberty of speech—it comes to you this week as a Democratic paper. By a careful review of the leading editorial, you will find the principal reasons which led us to take this step at this time clearly set forth, some of which you will be prepared to bear witness to the truth of.
Notwithstanding it is a question with us whether neutrality is not a national crime at this time, in view of the troubled waters of the political ocean, we would not have made the change now, only for the reasons set forth, which you are referred to, yet do we not suppose that any, save the most ultra, would desire us to fall under the withering effects of pecuniary embarrassment. We have no doubt but that some who are opposed to us politically will rejoice to know that the paper is permanently established—if not for its political character, for other benefits that must be realized by it as a medium of intelligence.
And yet we entertain no doubt but that some will be dissatisfied, and as we sought no advantage in the beginning, and are not disposed to take advantage of any now, therefore, if any wish to have their money refunded, we will comply with their wishes when made known to us. This we will most cheerfully do, however much we could desire to retain them on our subscription list.
