For the PROVIDENCE JOURNAL.

Mr. Carter,

By publishing the following Extracts from the Economy of Human Life, you will oblige some of your readers.

The author, speaking of Justice, says:

"The peace of society dependeth on Justice: the happiness of individuals, the safe enjoyment of all their possessions. Keep the desires of thy heart, therefore, within the bounds of moderation: let the hand of Justice lead them right. Cast not an evil eye on the goods of thy neighbour; let whatever is his property be sacred from thy touch. Let no temptation allure thee, nor any provocation excite thee to lift up thy hand to the hazard of his life. Defame him not in his character, bear no false witness against him, corrupt not his servant to cheat or forsake him—and the wife of his bosom, O tempt not to

!

Speaking of Charity, he says—"Happy is the man that hath sown in his breast the seeds of benevolence. The produce thereof shall be charity and love. From the fountain of his heart shall rise rivers of goodness; and the streams shall overflow for the benefit of mankind. He pitith the poor in their troubles; he rejoiceth in furthering the prosperity of all men. He censureth not his neighbour; he believeth not the tales of envy and malevolence, neither repeateth he their slanders. He forgiveth the injuries of men, he wipeth them from his remembrance. Revenge and malice have no place in his heart."

Speaking of virtues in women, he says.

"Before her steps walketh prudence, and virtue attendeth at her right hand. Her eye speaketh of times and love, but discretion with a sceptre sitteth on her brows. The tongue of the licentious is dumb in her presence: the awe of her virtue keepeth him silent when scandal is busy, and the fame of her neighbour is slandered from tongue to tongue. If charity and good nature open not her mouth, the finger of silence resteth on her lips. Her breast is the mansion of goodness, therefore she suffereth no evil in others."

If a more general attention was paid to the foregoing observations, I believe that the tales of envy and malevolence would be less repeated by those who may hear them from those whose throats are like open sepulchres, and under whose tongues is the poison of asps.
