Taking appeals from police court decisions in bawdy house cases seems to be the order of the day. Ex-Superintendent of the work house, Sylvis, will quit official life and go into the coal business. Thanksgiving services will be held at the Zane Street M. E. Church at 10:30 A. M., on Thanksgiving day. The Second Presbyterian Church Social will meet at the residence of Mr. B. F. Caldwell on Twentieth street, Friday evening. The condition of Coal street, between Third and First, since it was graded by General Mahoney's force, is worse than it was before. Wm. Hiser, son of P. Hiser, the sexton, desires it stated that it was not he who was arrested on Saturday night in a house of ill repute. Sheriff Tingle informs us that the German Bank is the only banking institution in the city that has thus far paid its taxes without controversy. Wheeling boasts of a dog which, after slaughtering a rat, takes the dead rodent and places it on a rail of the rail road, that the cars may run over it. It is reported that Mr. and Mrs. King, of Tiltonville, who have been separated the past ten years, have condoned each other's faults, and have been reunited. The ferry boat at Bellaire, "Here I Am," caught fire Monday night from the ash pan, but the flames were extinguished before material damage resulted. There was a very fair attendance at the Fifth ward market yesterday morning, and the various stands were loaded with a plentiful supply of turkeys, which retailed at $1.50 to $1.75 apiece. Workmen are engaged in digging out the gutter on the east side of Market between Alley 2 and Seventh street, after which it will be bouldered and the street in that vicinity put in better condition. Darpine has been engaged to paint the scenery for the new Masonic Temple (old Washington Hall), and will commence work on it in a few days. An elegant drop curtain for use between acts will be prepared. A well known barber in town was noticed, yesterday, in company with the lady of his choice, wending his way towards Gretna Green. He returned a married man, which scores another victim for Squire Mayes. On Thursday and Friday nights next, a festival will be given at Arbenz hall, South Side, for the benefit of the La belle Mission Sabbath school. During the progress a handsome gold necklace, which is now on exhibition at Grubb's jewelry store, will be voted for. Misses Fannie M. Harris and Mary Steele are the contestants. Mrs. Peppers says she hopes she did not interfere with the pleasure of the sportsmen at Frank Walters', yesterday, by declining to allow her pet bear to be shot for. She is too fond of "Ephraim" to allow him to be made food for the sportsman's gun, so she determined to present him to the Zoological Gardens at Cincinnati, whence he was shipped on the Andes yesterday. A tramp printer, named Church, was ejected from a box car on the Panhandle a short distance from Steubenville, Saturday, while the train was in motion. He fell under the wheels and both of his legs were cut off. He was brought back to the city, and is at the hospital. It is not likely that he will recover. He was in company with another tramp, on their way from Columbus to Pittsburgh.
