Full Text

By a private Letter from the Hague we are informed, that the foreign Ambassadors at Paris wrote to their Friends in Holland, that the Court and Ministry of France were thrown into the greatest Consternation on receiving an Account of the taking of the Isle of Aix: for they had bent all their Endeavours to provide for the Security of Brest, and left the Part of the Coast, where the Island is situate almost defenceless, the regular Troops left to guard it consisting only of five Battalions.

They concluded that we must succeed in the Scheme, which they supposed us to have laid, of destroying all the Shipping and Magazines of Rochfort, before they could send fresh Forces to its Relief, the Country being so bare of Troops, that they were forced to order thither the Gendarmerie, and two Regiments of the Swiss Guards from Paris, whose March must have taken up at least fifteen Days, the Distance from Paris to Rochefort being two hundred and two Leagues.
