A hand-car, standing on the up-grade, got loose and went down the inclined plane with great velocity to the bridge, upon the end of which six men were working. To avoid the danger, these men swung themselves over the bridge, holding on by the timbers. The car rushed along, and passing over their hands and arms crushed them severely. One of the number, a Mr. Tarrar, of Halifax, let go his hold, and fell a distance of forty feet.
