Full Text

ON FRIENDSHIP.
When all the dreams of youth have fled
Like phantoms from the piercing gaze;
And all their fancied joys have sped,
Or clouded in affliction's maze.
What can ease the tortured mind?
Or make the aching heart rejoice?
And what give pleasure so refin'd,
As friendship's sweet, endearing voice?
When the soul's absorbed in sadness,
Or crush'd beneath a load of care;
What can raise the heart to gladness?
What then can shield it from despair?
'Tis friendship's kindred broken sigh,
Which starts unbidden at the sight
Of others woe, of dangers nigh,
And fills the breast with calm delight.
