NAACP MAY FORM
UNIT HERE
Efforts are being made by a group of local residents to re-establish a Champaign-Urbana chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

On March 4 Paul E. Thurlow, Joliet attorney and state president of the NAACP, will speak at a community-wide meeting at Salem Baptist Church, 50 E. Park street. He will explain the purposes and methods of the organization and the steps necessary to set up a local chapter.

A chapter was started here many years ago, but was disbanded after a short time.

The meeting March 4 will begin at 8 p.m., following a half-hour musical program.

Next step then would be to call a public organization meeting to elect officers and apply for a charter.

Those who have organized into a committee to arrange for the March 4 program are Miss Judy Hirshfield, U. of I. student from Joliet, chairman; the Rev. W. H. Donaldson, minister at the Salem Baptist Church; Charles Kemp, local attorney; Mrs. Emma Liudell, Louis Taylor, Mrs. Alice Bradford and Mrs. Katie Gray.

Speaking Sunday night at the Student Club meeting at the Unitarian Church here, Thurlow discussed NAACP organization on national, state and local level. He spoke at great length on FEPC laws.

He said he was optimistic that FEPC laws soon would be adopted in Illinois.

"Thirteen other statewide organizations are now cooperating toward this end and Gov. Stratton has pledged his support," Thurlow said. In the eight states where FEPC laws have been adopted, the results have been very successful, he said. Of 350 cases referred to the commission in New York since the law was established, prosecution was needed in only 46 cases, he added.
