About 3 o'clock last Saturday morning, complaint being made to the town-guard, of two riotous assemblies of negroes, one to the northward of the parade, and the other at the east end of the town, detachments were sent to secure them; when 30 women and 2 men were conducted to the guard-house. About nine the same morning they were taken before a magistrate; when the two men and twenty-five of the women were ordered to receive twenty lashes, and to pay four bits each, two were excused on account of their youth; and five free women were sentenced to receive twenty lashes, and to be kept at hard labour seven days.
