Something must be said as to the return of the plateau shape hat trimmed with flowers, and tipped in a coquettish fashion over the forehead, and this make of hat has many versions: some show a flat, straight brim. others are turned up at one side, while many are straight in front and turned sharply up at the back. But in every case this style of hat is worn well tilted over the face.
A brown straw hat to match a brown frock had a flat, straight brim, the shallow crown was circled with a wreath of small, green leaves, and at the back a bunch of red cherries. These fell as a fringe over the hair, and were perfect specimens of the flower maker's art.
Another hat built on the same lines, was in blue straw, and also trimmed in cherries. A dark violet straw had as its sole trimming some small ostrich feathers, shaded from pale mauve to the deepest violet.
Smart women make a study of veils. The veil to be worn with this hat was of fine black net with spots of violet chenille. And the above mentioned brown and blue hats had each its own veil, brown and blue of precisely matched to the hat in every rose in y leaves around ier smart ed straw, ud trim- 'ae Fry ANE pale pink, 'ed roses,
The round feather boas are already in favor and may be seen in every color, the most popular being those entirely of black or entirely of white. There is a novelty of feathers, which really is a revival, like most novelties, neither more nor less than the old paradise plume, which is dyed to every possible tone, and in a combination of pale Wedgwood blue and pale mauve is a joy to the artistic conscience.
The tradition of the Trianon has inspired some exquisite revivals of flowered silks, lace draperies, and loose cloaks of pale colors traced with embroidery.
A beautiful example is a dress of painted chiffon with a lace collar embroidered in pink and blue, worn beneath a cloak somewhat of the burnous shape of pale pink, lined with pale blue with a hood and front embroidered with roses traced with golden threads.
An example of luxury is a dress of soft strawberry pink cloth, with deeply square collar traced closely with padded gold thread embroidery and showing a vest of real lace tied with pale blue bows.
Over this should be worn a black net and velvet ribbon and lace scarf, and one of the new tiny hats of gold lace trimmed with pink roses and tied with black velvet ribbons. But such frocks are not for the moment; rather just now do we devote ourselves to coats and skirts, choosing the former impartially of the short basque and bolero shapes, the latter round, touching the ground everywhere, but not trailing upon it, and being cut on the cross and full on the hips.
