Plans for the New Market-House—Several plans for the proposed New Centre Market-house have been presented, and we had a brief glance at some of them at the City Hall this morning. The one that most strikes the eye is that of Mr. Robert Mills, a really magnificent building, and the representation of it is executed with high artistic skill. It is certainly a beautiful picture, representing the immense building, the Washington Monument in the distance, a fountain in front of the hall, with a tall steeple thereon, and place for a town clock, &c. It is handsomely framed.
Mr. Chas. F. Anderson, of New York, presents one for competition of almost equal magnificence, his view being well drawn, and framed. It gives a front and rear view of the building, with an idea of what the whole will resemble, if built according to the artist's design. The front on the avenue is rich indeed, and that on B street quite handsome, leaving the canal open as a place for market boats, and eschewing the idea of an edifice over the water.
These designs look almost as grand as those of the Capitol.
Mr. Jas. King's design combines the economical with the beautiful, and would make a fine looking market-house. The same may be said of those of Messrs. T. E. Geiger, P. Nerning, L. D. Williams, Reason & Wetherold, of Baltimore, A. Leader, J. B. Cluskey, and others. One of them only that we observed being of a single story in height, and most of them had steeples with receptacles for a town clock.
The views were all accompanied by plans of the interior, describing lengths and breadths of the several departments, the entrances, and various practical accommodations and merits of the useful in these plans and other particulars, we had no opportunity of informing ourselves, and indeed, no time to give more than this brief notice thereof.
With such an array of architectural grandeur, those having to decide between the various plans will have no easy task to perform in selecting the one best in every way. We only trust that there will be no narrow-minded false economy to govern the selectors, and that they may obtain a model, which when built, will in all time be equal to the wants of the people, and in proportion to the just magnitude of what such a building should be for the Metropolitan city of the nation.
