While Hurricane Ione whistled lonely over the North Atlantic Ocean today, shattered towns in North Carolina and Mexico counted a sad toll of death and damage brought by her and her sister storm, Hilda.
Mexico was left with at least 166 dead and 100 missing in the Gulf port of Tampico and surrounding area where Hilda hit. Continuing floods threatened to raise this toll.
In North Carolina, which took the brunt of Ione before she veered to sea, five persons were dead and property damage was in the millions.
Ione skirted New England, still busy repairing damages of the earlier Hurricane Diane.
The Washington weather bureau, tracing Ione over the open sea, reported she still is a dangerous storm and advised caution for all shipping in the area. At 5 a.m. she was centered 150 miles southeast of Halifax, N.S., traveling at a fast clip of 45 miles per hour.
