Full Text
The schr. Mary Washington at Philadelphia, brings accounts to the 1st June. Markets at Vera Cruz very dull, and overstocked with all sorts of produce. The Castle of St. Juan de Ulua is still in the possession of the Royalists, and they have laid on all foreign vessels a duty of 8 dolls. and 50 cents per ton besides making them pay such duties as they may think proper on all articles imported at that place, and then charged with the regular duties at Vera Cruz. About an hour and a half after the Mary Washington left Vera Cruz, the castle not more than four miles distant, she was chased and fired at by a piratical boat. After a chase of four hours, fortunately out-sailed the pirate, whom she could not repel, being unarmed. Very few vessels that leave that place unarmed, escape robbery or attempts at the same.

Event Details
The schr. Mary Washington brings accounts from Vera Cruz to June 1. Markets are very dull and overstocked with produce. The Castle of St. Juan de Ulua remains under Royalist control, who impose a duty of 8 dollars and 50 cents per ton on foreign vessels, plus arbitrary duties on imports, followed by regular duties at Vera Cruz. Shortly after departure, the unarmed Mary Washington was chased and fired upon by a piratical boat from near the castle, but out-sailed it after four hours. Few unarmed vessels escape robbery there.
