Full Text

Thursday last was duly observed, in compliance with the recommendation of the authorities, by the citizens of this place as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to the Almighty for the blessings we have received, and the unnumbered mercies we have enjoyed. The day was one of the finest of the season; the air balmy and mild, the sun shone bright and cheering, the glad waters sparkling, and all nature seemingly cheerful, and thankful too! Our churches were generally opened, and the pastors of the different congregations preached appropriate sermons. After the close of divine services the streets were thronged with happy people.—Around the family hearths there were many pleasant re-unions. Altogether the Thanksgiving Day of 1854 was one which will be long remembered for its interesting associations.
