Letters from Lisbon of the 1st of September advise, that there was just arrived there a Ship from the Bay of All-Saints, the Captain of which reports, that they had been informed by two Ships from the East-Indies, that Anaverdi Kan, one of the Heads of the Ma- rattas, a People of Indostan, who had cast off the Yoke of the Mogul. and had either drove away, or taken Prisoners, almost all the Governors of the Territories on the Coast of Coromandel, in the Neighbourhood of Pondicherry, had at length, in August last Year, been beaten and killed by Chanda Sahib Nabob of Trichinopoly, assisted by the French of Pondicherry, and the Lieutenant General of the Empire of the Mogul.
This Nabob had been one of Nizam Ali Khan's Prisoners, but after a Negotiation of some Years, had been set at Liberty by the Interposition of M. Dupleix, the French General of the East Indies; in Consideration whereof, and of the Succours with which he had been assisted, he yielded up to the French General the City of Vellore, and its Dependencies, consisting of 45 Villages, bordering upon the Territory of Pondicherry, and had voluntarily given the Town of St. Thomas to the Crown of Portugal, of which Father Angelis, a Franciscan Friar, born in the Indies of an illustrious Family, had taken Possession in the same Month of August.
