At the recent Triennial Conference in London of England's Society for the Liberation of Religion from Church-rates, the chairman cited statistics showing that from 1801 to 1851, over 5 million church sittings were added mostly by private benefactions (4,852,000) versus minimal Parliamentary grants (188,472), arguing for the voluntary system and separation of church from state affairs.

The "Liberation of Religion" In England.--They have in England a society for the Liberation of Religion from the incubus of Church-rates, and the establishment of the voluntary principle in all the churches of that country. At the Triennial Conference of this Society, recently held in London, the chairman stated that between the years 1801 and 1851 there had been added to the church and chapel accommodations, upwards of five millions sittings, and that of that number only 188,472 were added by Parliamentary grants, while 4,852,000 were added by private benefactions. This immense disproportion is certainly a very practical argument in favor of the voluntary system, and adds one more to the thousands of pre-existing proofs, that the more thoroughly church matters are divested of affairs of State, the better. If the spirit of true Christianity cannot secure its legitimate triumph, at all times and under all circumstances, the bringing in of the strong arm of Roman law to help it is sure to attach a millstone to its wings, or else secure for it a very dubious victory.
