WARS AW. Dec. 6. 1765.
THE Turks and Tartars continue approaching by little and little the Frontiers of Poland; and we believe it will not be long before the World becomes acquainted with the Resolution of the Divan, which has hitherto been kept surprisingly secret.
Extract of a letter from the Vistula, a large River in Poland, November 18.
"THE public are impatient to see the consequence of the interview which the Hospodar of Moldavia, agent of the grand Signior, had lately with the Prince de Repnin, ambassador of the Empress of Russia. This interview must have been very significant, from the following part of it, which has transpired: The agent of his highness communicated to the Russian ambassador, that he had express order to inform him, that the Porte could not behold with an indifferent eye, but even took umbrage at the Russian troops still continuing in Poland, and there occupying Stanislawow, Brody, and other places bordering on the Ottoman territory, altho' the motive which the Empress alledged no longer subsisted, since the election of a King was over: That therefore the Porte, desired that the Russian troops might not only without delay evacuate those places and in general all those on the frontiers, but that they would likewise quit all Poland and Lithuania."
That Prince de Repnin made answer to this declaration, which it seems came unexpectedly upon him, "That the Russian troops entered Poland, with no other view but to put an end to disorder: that they were to continue there till the tranquility was firmly established; and that the Ottoman Porte had nothing to fear on that head."
Whereupon the agent of the grand Signior repeating his commission with great vivacity, and in very forcible terms, the Prince de Repnin seemed to pay more attention thereto, and answered, "That he should take arrangements for causing the places which the Prince of Moldavia had mentioned to be evacuated: That, as to the second point, relating to the march of all the Russian troops which were in Poland to return to their own country, he could not do any thing without a previous order from his Sovereign: That in the mean time he would make report to her Imperial Majesty of what had passed in their interview, and inform the agent of the resolution which the Empress should take thereon."
To this the letter replied: "I shall dispatch somebody in the mean time towards the frontiers, that I may be informed by an eye-witness whether the ambassador fulfils his engagement."
