The Citizens' Ticket.
We learn that the so called meeting of citizens have nominated a ticket for Mayor and Aldermen, which is to be run to day as a Temperance ticket. Personally, we have not a word to say against one of the gentlemen on that ticket, but the idea of offering such an one to the electors of Worcester. as a Temperance ticket, in preference to all others, is a little too barefaced an attempt at humbug, to go down with men, possessed of ordinary intelligence. The very fact, that if report speaks true, one of the chief instigators in getting up this ticket is a prominent whig, who has made a fortune out of the liquor traffic, and omits no opportunity to cast ridicule on the whole temperance movement, and that it contains the names of some men who have positively declined the nomination, and of others who are not, now, and never have pretended to be teetotal temperance men, shows that the real object of it is not to advance the cause of temperance, but that the movement, with a portion, at least, of those who are engaged in it, is, what we have declared it to be from the beginning, a whig trick, contrived on purpose to create dissensions in the ranks of the Free Democracy. While we regret that some few of our friends have suffered themselves to be so deceived by their political opponents, as to commit themselves in favor of a movement of this kind, planned expressly for the defeat and discomfiture of the Free Democracy of Worcester, by their bitterest opponents, we can not but rejoice, that, by far the greater number of those, who, at first, were disposed to favor a Citizens' ticket in good faith, have taken the back track since the real character and tendency of the movement has been made apparent.
