SUCCESSORS TO TWO RESIGNED DEPUTIES NOT YET APPOINTED

No one has been named yet by Sheriff Pat Patterson to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of M. F. (Jack) Donlin, jailor and deputy sheriff, and James W. Hathaway, chief criminal deputy sheriff, both of whom withdrew from the service Sunday.

They tendered their resignations to Sheriff Patterson Friday.

Donlin had been with the force for five years and Hathaway seven years. Both men are very well known and have many staunch friends who were surprised to learn of their resignations.

"Hathaway is quitting to devote all his time to his ranch interests in the Huachucas. He was the veteran officer of the sheriff's office and during his connection with the office he made several important arrests," said Sheriff Patterson, who added that Donlin, too, resigned in order to devote all his time to another vocation. "I do not know who I will appoint to fill the vacancies, but I have a number of applications to pick from," said Sheriff Patterson.

Jack Donlin came to Nogales in 1914 with the 12th United States Infantry and has been in this city ever since. He served in the army for ten years and was a sergeant in the same battalion with Stephen D. Little at the time Little was killed by Mexican rebels during a battle in Nogales on November 26, 1915. Camp Little was named for Stephen D. Little.

Both Donlin and Hathaway have performed valuable service for Santa Cruz county. They have captured many desperate outlaws, including ex-convicts, murderers and cattle thieves. Both are known to be fearless and minutely accurate and quick with the gun. They were feared and respected by the unlawful element in this section.

PATTERSON REPLIES TO STAR STATEMENT

In reply to a statement appearing in yesterday's Arizona Daily Star in which it was said that "the under-tone of friction in the office of Sheriff "Pat" Patterson which has been simmering for months, came to a head today when M. F. "Jack" Donlin, jailor, and James W. Hathaway, chief criminal deputy sheriff, tendered their resignations". Sheriff Patterson yesterday issued the following statement:
"Hathaway and Donlin quit on their own free will. There was no friction whatever and never was as far as I know. There is nothing significant to the fact that they resigned ten days before the primary"
Hathaway left Sunday evening to personally take charge of his ranch in the Huachucas and Donlin, it is understood, is leaving today on a trip to San Francisco and Oakland. In the latter city he will visit his father.
