Convalescence of the Invalids.
SURGEON-GENERAL'S OFFICE, May 3—9 a. m.
Hon. E. M. STANTON, Secretary of War.
SIR: I have the honor to report that the Secretary of State has had a comparatively comfortable night, the apparatus not producing as much inconvenience as was anticipated. Mr. F. Seward has gained strength the past 24 hours.

I have the honor to report that the Secretary of State has taken a drive to-day, is free from pain, and stronger. Mr. F. Seward is somewhat better, perfectly conscious, and only complains of the irksomeness of the prescribed quiet.
