Proclaiming the 11th nationwide observance, President Eisenhower suggested the 1954 theme be repeated.
Co-sponsored by the National Safety Council and the Department of Agriculture, Farm Safety Week is backed by many farm leaders and will be celebrated in 31 States this year.
In his proclamation, the President noted that a disabling injury strikes some farm person in America every 26 seconds as the result of an avoidable accident, and that more accidental deaths occur in farming than in any other major industry.
He urged all farmers to "make every effort to develop safe work habits and skills, so that they may Farm to Live and Live to Farm."
Beginning Sunday, July 25, Farm Safety Week will continue through Saturday with each day set aside for special attention to safety.
Ministers will be asked to discuss the Commandment, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" in their Sunday sermons.
The other special days:
Monday: Home Safety Day.
Tuesday: Livestock Safety Day.
Wednesday: Fall Prevention Day.
Thursday: Highway Safety Day.
Friday: Machinery Safety Day.
Saturday: Review Day.
The Safety Council listed numerous statistics showing why the need is great for increased farm safety.
Here is what will happen on farms during the next year unless safety is increased, the Safety Council maintains:
About 14,000 farm residents will die and 1,200,000 will be injured; some 3,800 will be killed in working accidents; 6,000 will be killed in motor vehicles mishaps; 3,500 will die in home accidents; one out of 19 will suffer a disabling injury; 38 will die every day; one out of six farms will be the scene of an accident; four farm buildings will be destroyed by fire every hour.
The Agriculture Department suggested farm families hold their own "quiz shows" to improve the safety record.
They should ask how they can teach safety; what they owe their families, their community and themselves in safety; how they can further the safety program, and so on.
