Correspondence of the Baltimore Patriot.

Washington, March 10, 1840.

The contest in the House of Representatives about the New Jersey Election Case, has terminated as every one knew it would, after the Administration Party had shamelessly avowed their wish that the quality of the lawfulness of the votes should not be regarded by the Committee of Elections in making their report; and after that Party had repeatedly refused to allow the Minority of the Committee to make a Counter Report. The non-Commissioned pretenders, Messrs. Dickerson, Vroom, and their associates, have been voted into the vacant seats by a numerical majority, who are ready at all times to yield a blind, unthinking, unscrupulous, servile compliance with the requisitions of Party. No time has been given even for the report of the Majority of the Committee declaring that the non-commissioned pretenders had received a majority of the votes as shown before the polls were expurgated. None of the testimony has been considered by the House—the votes in this momentous case. The Members of the Committee have not ever been permitted to bring in their Counter-Report—much less, make the subject of examination and discussion: and scarcely one of them has been permitted to open his mouth to explain the partial and iniquitous proceedings of the framers of the Report. Mr. Fillmore, it is true, did succeed finally in speaking hypothetically, after being interrupted repeatedly by such persons as Petrikin and Duncan.

The great mass of the Loco Focos who marched up in solid column to vote in their New Jersey brethren, without a blush or a wince, were of the mind of an extraordinary rectly charged to lay, in the lobby, with candid member in their ranks, who was dr- knowing nothing at all about the merits of the case. A gentleman—not a member said to him, "Come now, Mr. ---, confess you have never seen the evidence. How can you vote that these men are entitled to their seats." "Oh! they are good democrats, I know, and that is enough for me"
