"The rumors which reached us recently from Washington, touching the defalcation of a high Government official, have taken a definite shape, so far as to designate Governor Stevens of Washington Territory as the delinquent. The alleged defalcation amounts to $40,000; which sum, it is said, Mr. Stevens has owed the Government ever since he was Gov. of the Territory. Some of our journals thinks it is a remarkable fact that such a defalcation should have remained unrevealed for so long a time. To my mind, the remarkable fact is that the expose should have been made just at this time, while Mr. Stevens is already staggering under the heavy load which his duties as Chairman of the Breckinridge National Committee imposes upon him."
This Hon. Stevens is the gentleman who sends dispatches by Pony and Telegraph to Senator Gwin and the S. F. Herald.
