MURDER MOST FOUL.--One of the foulest murders that was perhaps ever heard of, was committed in this village on Friday last, about eight o'clock in the morning.--Guy C. Clark, (whose name is familiar to our citizens on account of his having been wounded some time since, in an affray with one Briggs,) murdered his wife, Mrs. Fanny Clark, in cold blood, and in the most brutal and shocking manner. Clark it seems had previously been in confinement, on the complaint of his wife, by reason of ill usage and frequent threats of violence. By what means he had obtained his liberty, we know not, but he had been at large for several weeks previous to the fatal morning. On Wednesday last, he returned from the west, and on Friday morning he breakfasted with his family at their residence in the building commonly called the Columbian Inn, and to outward appearance was on terms of friendship with the ill-fated woman.

Shortly after breakfast he commenced his long premeditated assault upon his wife, and after knocking her down with his fist and choking her till she was nearly senseless, he seized an axe and finished his work of murder by nearly severing her head from her body, and mangling her face, arm and breast in the most shocking manner. So expeditious was this miscreant in performing his diabolical work, that, notwithstanding a shriek from her and the screams of her children alarmed several men who were at work in the lower part of the building, they could not possibly arrive at the spot before she was dead. Time can hardly erase from our minds the impression made by the hideous spectacle.

Clark made no attempt to escape, nor any resistance, but was conducted safely to prison. A coroner's jury was immediately assembled, and after a short investigation, a verdict was rendered, in substance, that the deceased met her death by blows of an axe, maliciously and wilfully inflicted upon her by Guy C. Clark.

Mrs. Clark was about 44 years of age, industrious, and of reputable character. Her relatives we understand, reside in Pennsylvania, some of them at or near Wilkesbarre. She has left five young children--who are now orphans indeed.
