QUARANTINE AT
UNIVERSITY TO
HALT MEETING

Action Follows Great Demonstration Against Marvin Friday Night.

MOVE EFFECTIVE
Meeting Of Student Body Has Been Called For Monday Afternoon.

TUCSON, Jan. 22 (AP)—The University of Arizona was placed under a rigid quarantine against scarlet fever this afternoon.

No grouping of students unnecessary to regular school work for a period of five days will be allowed. The quarantine had its first effect tonight with the cancelling of the Phoenix high school-freshman, and the Arizona-Tempe basket ball games.

The quarantine will be lifted Wednesday if there are no more cases of the fever it was stated by Dr. C. H. Marvin, president of the university. The action followed a demonstration of students at the basket ball game here last night, when a resolution was read condemning the action of the legislature in voting an appreciation of Dr. Marvin and requesting that the board of regents accept Dr. Marvin's resignation.

The quarantine is expected to cancel a student body meeting called for Monday, to decide upon the passing of the resolution. Dr. S. P. Fahlen, state superintendent of public health, ordered the quarantine Saturday afternoon by telegram to Dr. A. G. Schnabel, Tucson public health officer.

There were only three cases under observation on the campus tonight, according to Dr. Van Horn. They are under care in the old music school building on the north side of the campus grounds. William Todt was placed under observation yesterday with the fever. No cases are reported exceedingly serious.

A resolution condemning the action of the state legislature in the voting an appreciation of Dr. C. H. Marvin, and requesting that the board of regents accept Dr. Marvin's resignation, caused a furore and uproar at the collegiate opening and, dedication of the new university gymnasium Friday night.

The resolution was brought before the students by Curtis Benjamin, president of the student body, by request of the "A" club, student organization of two-letter men.

The resolution carried the unanimous support of the "A" club; the Bobcats, senior honorary society for men students; the Chain Gang, an honorary society for men of the junior class, and the traditions committee.

Result in Doubt

A vote on the resolution by the student body which was taken within the last few seconds of the period between halves of the Arizona-Tempe games, leaves the actual adoption in question. Benjamin stated Friday night that the motion to (Continued on Page Eight)

Accept the resolution was carried, two to one. Richard Harless representing another group, held that the resolution was not passed.

Benjamin said: There is no doubt but what the motion carried in favor of the resolution. Most of the opposition practically admitted it, but there was such an uproar that the high vote would probably be contested. Consequently I decided to call another meeting of the student body Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock so the question can be definitely settled in the minds of everyone. Furthermore, the Monday afternoon meeting will be positively a student body meeting. No one but students will be allowed to enter the meeting.

A short meeting of the student body after the basket ball game gave only the announcement of Monday's afternoon meeting.

Miss Doan, secretary of the student body stated Friday night that the president of the student body was entirely out of order in calling the meeting as a student body assembly, according to the student body constitution. She quoted the section, "The call of each student body meeting shall be announced by the president 24 hours before the meeting by posting notices on the official bulletin boards. He had no right to call the meeting," she stated.

Harless said Friday night that those he represented felt that since Dr. Marvin has resigned, the students should stay apart from the entire issue. He objected to the meeting being called without proper notice; secondly, that no hearing was allowed the opposition on the floor; and thirdly, that he felt as spokesman the students should not commit themselves in the issue.

Dr. G. M. Butler, dean of the college of mines and engineering, spoke a few minutes after Benjamin had read the resolution to the students and the Tucson citizens who were in attendance at the game.

"I want to ask you two questions," the dean stated. First, what effect do you think the act of a student body will have on a legislature in Phoenix? It won't have any effect," he continued. "Secondly, is it fair when a man is down, in one manner or another, I don't know whether you will agree with me or not; but is it fair to kick him when he is down?"

At this time an attempt of Benjamin to answer these questions was met with yells of "play ball, play ball!" from the basket ball fans. It was at this time that Harless gained the floor only to speak his thoughts unheard for the uproar.

The Resolution

"To the Honorable Board of Regents, University of Arizona:

"Whereas, Dr. C. H. Marvin, finding himself unable to reconcile the two opposing factions which have been at strife on our campus for the last two years, has handed the board of regents his resignation from the office of the president of the university; and

"Whereas, After Dr. Marvin has handed his resignation to the regents, it seems that certain interests are making every effort to cause a continuation of this strife and apparently are attempting to stir up further friction in the university and in the state, accomplishing their purpose chiefly by political means; and

Whereas, The state legislature of Arizona, acting as we believe for the best interests of the university and for our own individual interests, condemn the action of the state legislature, and respectfully request that the board of regents accept Dr. Marvin's resignation at once. Passing a resolution giving Dr. Marvin its vote of confidence, thus continuing to turn university affairs. The name of the institution has been dragged into the mire until it stopped, and every student wants it stopped. Curtis Benjamin, president of the student body, upon ratification by the students. "I, for one, am damn sick and tired of it, and want it stopped." To this he received a tremendous applause. The resolution stands as signed by the student body organization or the University. True condition of affairs or our therefore. His campus, also has caused friction by. The! is almost shameless," Benjamin told. Be it and.
