Another Suicide Prevented.

Clinton, Dec. 4.—There is a man locked up in a cell in the city jail who undoubtedly is suffering from delirium tremens. Saturday afternoon, about 3:30 o'clock, he told a person on the street that he wanted to find the chief of police, for the purpose of being locked up, at the same time stating he was "crazy." The two walked up the street until they were almost in front of the city hall, when the insane man threw his hat into the air and let out a yell which would have done justice to a Fiji Islander, about to enjoy a feast on the remains of his victim in a combat. Officers Lorenz and Knutsen were near and soon had the insane man in their grasp, altho it was about all these two strong men could do to handle their unreasonable prisoner. The man was locked in a cell and a few minutes later the other prisoners called loudly for the officers, and an investigation showed that the crazy man had attempted to hang himself with his suspenders, which he had tied around his neck and fastened to the top of the cell. When cut down he was gasping for breath and was black in the face. The officers then handcuffed their man, thinking he would make no attempt to injure himself while thus handicapped. But in this they were mistaken, for he endeavored to butt his brains out against the ends of the cell. The man was then fastened to a bench in the cell and was given an injection of morphine, which soon had the desired effect.

Who the man is the officers have been unable to learn, as he says he does not know his name. He is recovering and in a few days will undoubtedly be able to leave the jail, altho his mind may be permanently affected.
