ADDITIONS TO FORCE DOUBLES COST OF WORK
BY WILLIAM J. M' EVERY.

WASHINGTON - Prohibition enforcement next year will cost the American people more than $20,000,000, about double the cost of previous years, if estimates submitted to the budget bureau are approved.
The federal prohibition bureau is seeking about $12,000,000, while the coast guard has asked approximately $8,000,000 for maintenance and operation of the augmented rum defense fleet.
Department of Justice Adds Fee.
To these direct charges must be added the expenses of the department of justice in prosecuting dry cases before the courts. The exact amount of these is not yet known but they will add a considerable item to the total.
Will Cost $20,000,000.
The $20,000,000 annual charge for dry enforcement has come to stay for some time, officials believe. Hitherto it has hovered about $10,000,000, but with the permanent addition of a large force of specially constructed boats to the coast guard for rum defense purposes another $10,000,000 must be added each year for its operation as long as the rum menace off the coast continues.
