POETRY.
For the Van Buren Press,
To Miss E. F. B., Van Buren, Ark.
In far off climes of orient seas,
Is found an isle of vine-clad trees
Where incense sweet, from tropic flowers.
Floats 'mid the shady myrtle bowers,
And singing birds of beauty rare,
Disport 'neath skies forever fair.
And in that isle a river bright
Flows gently onward, day and night--
'Mid many a note of joy and love,
From nightingale and cooing dove,
But not a sound of human pain--
Till its glad waves reach the ocean main.
But oh! sweet maid. a light more fair
Hath thy young life than aught found there;
And melodies more sweet than song
Of sweetest birds those bowers among,
Oh! may it like that radiant stream
As gently flow as come bright dream,
And never hear th' unwelcome sound
Of sorrow's voice thy path around:
Drink every sweet. taste every bliss,
That's known in sphere of life like this-
Flow gently on, in joy and love
Till it join the good and pure above.
