Local Boys Win First, Second and Third Places In Contest
First, second and third place medals in the State-wide potato project contest, conducted among vocational agriculture boys, were won by Boyd Hardesty, William Wildesen and Harry L. Porter, respectively, all of them being members of Oakland chapter Future Farmers of America.
The three winners were accompanied to Baltimore by their agriculture instructor, O. T. Graser, and each received in person the medals as awarded by Miles Fairbanks, secretary of the Maryland Farm Bureau.
Each project was of the Rural Russett variety of potatoes and each secured certified seed.
The Russetts yielded in excess of the rate of 400 bushels per acre for both Boyd Hardesty and Harry Porter, who showed production costs of 15 cents and 14 cents, respectively, per bushel, after counting all expenses of production including fertilizer, all labor, spraying, rent of land, use of equipment and interest.
Each project was sprayed regularly and involved the use of a weeder.
Each boy has been a member of the potato club sponsored by the Oakland Rotary Club. The club contributed toward the expense of sending the boys to Baltimore.
