LONDON PAPER SETS 'QUAKE TOLL AT 15,000

LONDON, July 29. (U.P.) The Daily Herald published a story today which said it had been estimated 15,000 persons perished in the Italian earthquake last Wednesday.

The story was a dispatch from Naples and said the figure was based on personal observation and information from officials after a tour through the devastated area.

The correspondent said only 300 survivors had been counted in Aulonia out of a population of 3500.

He asserted that over half of the 5000 inhabitants of Lacedonia had perished, and estimated that from 60 to 70 per cent of the inhabitants were still buried in the ruins.

The Daily Herald's estimate has not been substantiated from any other source. Official Italian figures have risen to a little above 2000, while the best unofficial estimates placed it between 2000 and 4000.
