Full Text

Going to Pieces.

It is now quite apparent that the Republican combination with the little Repudiator in the Senate is falling to pieces. All of the Washington dispatches tend to this conclusion. The President has at last discovered that decent Republicans in Virginia want nothing to do with Mahone, and if our telegrams are to be relied upon, he has made up his mind to bestow a fair percentage of the federal patronage on his own party. This makes Mahone sick, and he has been in the mullygrubs for a week. Neither Gorham nor Riddleberger can be elected, and the Presidential crumbs are to be withheld from him. In this view the pay for his vote becomes remarkably thin. No wonder Mahone feels badly. He has made a national ass of himself and gets nothing for it. The Republican Senators are but little better off, while the Democrats are destined to emerge from the struggle with flying colors.
