From the RECORDER.
All the world remembers the story of the pasteboard tender in payment of a sum of money, which Thomas Jefferson made to Gabriel Jones. The old gentleman having seen the Recorder, determined to give our narrative the seal of his authority. He has transmitted a manuscript to Richmond, which appeared in the Virginia Gazette of Tuesday. He therein explains all the circumstances of avarice, of ingratitude, and baseness, which, in the course of this transaction distinguished and disgraced the character of Thomas Jefferson. We had, not long since, challenged and defied his excellency, to meet us on this charge, in a court of justice, and in a suit for defamation. The certificate of the honest Welshman, who is now eighty one years of age will supersede all future occasion for language of this kind. See now whether the Recorder tells lies.
Mr. Jefferson has lately found himself under the deplorable necessity of writing a fresh letter to Mr. Walker, with another peccavimus. This is in consequence of the racket, which the Recorder has raised about the affair. What would this unfortunate figure give to recall the moment, when he refused to pay Callender his fine? Chastisement was promised; and the promise has been kept with the most rigid punctuality. It seems that Gen. Henry Lee was the bearer of a challenge from Mr. Walker to our beloved President. For very good reasons, the publication of the documents has for some time been suspended; but they will appear in due time; and if we shall hear of any more chirrupping about Black Sally, we shall bring down from Albemarle, a whole pamphlet of depositions.
Such, O Democrats! is the faithful portrait of your favourite Hero!!!
