TVA's Record Of Benefits Wins Praises
WASHINGTON --TVA's accomplishments have surpassed expectations and "in my judgment TVA is a magnificent achievement of which every American should be proud," Sen. Lister Hill (D-Ala) declared recently.
The Alabama Democrat, who introduced HR 5081 in the House to create TVA, was a member of the House committee which considered the original TVA Act. and was appointed to the conference committee which adjusted differences between the two Houses. told the Senate Appropriations Sub-Committee relative to TVA's accomplishments:
"Floods have been controlled. Private investment is protected and the people are safe. The river has been made navigable and commerce between regions moves on this modern water highway.
Free World More Secure
"The largest power system in the United States has been developed. The people are using the power in their homes, on their farms and in their private enterprises as we hoped. And the nation's security has been fortified by power use for defense in ways we never dreamed. The soil of the Valley is more fertile, its forest more productive, all its basic resources are utilized more wisely because of TVA. The region is more productive, the nation is stronger, the free world is more secure because of TVA."
Senator Hill said that "in troubled times we have seen the development of a pattern of sound relations between management and labor which is a model for the future. In TVA, we have seen a high standard of technical competence and managerial efficiency combined with absolute integrity through the years. We have watched a wholly non-partisan, non-political record develop."
