Dr. Crane Opens Religious Services With Colleges Today

Religious Emphasis Week will be observed this week by the institutions in the Atlanta University Center with a variety of events to blend with the Center services in which all of the institutions are participating.

BEGINS TODAY Services will be broadcast over Radio Station WERD at 3 p.m.

Beginning this afternoon the faculty and students of Atlanta University, Clark College, Gammon Theological Seminary, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College and Spelman College will hear Dr. Henry Hitt Crane, pastor of Central Methodist Church, Detroit, Michigan, in a series of four messages in Sisters Chapel at Spelman College. Following Dr. Crane's initial message, he will speak again each night, Monday through Wednesday, at 7:00 in Sisters Chapel.

CONDUCTING WORSHIP Assisting Dr. Crane will be the Religious Emphasis speakers who are conducting worship on the individual campuses: Rev. Levi B. Miller, Jr., Executive Secretary of Christian Education, Washington Conference, the Methodist Church, at Clark College; Dr. Clarence Jordan, Director of the Koinonia Farm, Americus, Georgia, at Morehouse College; Dr. Webb Garrison, Assistant Dean, Candler School of Theology, Emory University at Morris Brown College; and Reverend Homer C. McEwen, pastor, First Congregational Church, Atlanta, at Spelman College.

DR CRANE Having participated in World War I as a YMCA secretary, he was one of the first Americans to go overseas where he remained the major part of a year, gaining all too intimate knowledge of the fury and the futility of war, early developing a terrific passion for the cause of peace, which has continued and deepened during recent war years until he is now one of the best known pacifist leaders on the continent.

FORTY COUNTRIES During 1936 and 37, Dr. Crane was granted a fourteen months sabbatical leave by members of Elm Park Church, during which time he and Mrs. Crane led the globe visiting approximately forty countries, meeting many important world figures, and having some exceedingly interesting experiences. Fifteen years previous to this trip, he made a five months tour of the Orient with his uncle, the late Dr. Crane, during which time the two collaborated in writing a book and more than one hundred fifty articles.

Dr. Crane was an Alternate Delegate to the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam in August and September 1948. Mrs. Crane accompanied him and after the conference they travelled for three months, studying intimately the conditions of these months in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland and England, studying intimately the conditions of these countries and talking with many people in all positions and all walks of life, and giving addresses in several places including Paris, France.

LICENSED PILOT In his college days, Dr. Crane was intensely interested in all sorts of extracurricular activities-was leader of the Glee Club and dramatic society; manager of the football team; member of the tennis team, All American Basketball Guard. He is a licensed private pilot and is interested in all phases of aviation. He is a member of the following fraternal organizations and clubs: Delta Tau Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa, Delta Sigma Rho Literary Society, Masonic, Knights Templar, the Consistory and Shrine, Kiwanis, Exchange, Rotary International (honorary), and the Detroit Athletic Club.

He organized the Detroit Chapter of the International Group in 1938 which is a vital group in that city.

WILL MEET GROUP Immediately following Dr. Crane's Sunday message, the presidents of the institutions in the Center will meet with him and his associates and the University Center Religious Emphasis Week Committee who planned the week's events in the faculty lounge of Dean Sage Hall, Atlanta University. Then on Monday, Dr. Crane will hold individual conferences and informal discussion periods with students of Gammon Theological Seminary and Morris Brown College from 1:30-3:00; and later in the afternoon the staff will hold a fellowship with student leaders and faculty members from the seven institutions.

COFFEE HOUR

Tuesday's program schedules Dr. Crane in informal discussion with the students of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges; and immediately following Tuesday night's message faculty members of the cooperating institutions have been invited to a discussion and coffee hour with the Religious Emphasis Week speakers in the Exhibition Room of Trevor Arnett Library. Atlanta University.

Dr. Crane will hold informal discussion periods with students of Atlanta University and Clark College early Wednesday afternoon, and will deliver his final message that night.

Thursday. March 4 has been set aside for Commitment day on the several campuses.
