John Elsmere, a prosperous farmer and local preacher of Elizabeth, Wirt County, West Virginia, went home drunk and beat his wife because his supper was not ready. He then worked himself into a frenzy of rage, and seizing a heavy poker brained his wife and his two daughters, aged respectively 12 and 17, and also killed the hired girl; then set fire to the house, and burned their bodies. He is in jail at Wirt court house and the sheriff has a strong guard to prevent lynching.
