Messrs. Gales & Seaton,
GENTLEMEN.—Observing in your paper of the 25th inst. the resolves of a meeting of the citizens of the Third Ward, for the purpose of aiding and relieving the poor of said Ward;—I can but express my hearty concurrence in the measure, with the assurance of aiding as much as my scanty means will admit. But should the committees appointed, delay for a moment that vigilance which the occasion requires, I fear, half this good design will be lost in abortion.—The moment for action is, when pinching necessity gripes. The season is inclement, and the poor are suffering. I have witnessed their distress, and have not been callous to their sufferings—and although prevented, by an unexpected occurrence, from being present at the meeting, have been mindful of the claims on benevolence of the helpless infant, and agonized mothers—and have strove to alleviate their wants; yet I have not done enough. I must solicit you to intercede for them, and through your paper, to endeavour by your best exertions to stimulate the committees of the city to be vigilant, in seeking out the distressed, in acquiring funds, and in distributing them properly to their relief. This is the moment, cold & hunger, despair and misery, already assail the poor, then press the committee to vigilance that they may save, Oh, save, by their laudable exertions, these victims to penury and want, and you shall ever receive the unfeigned thanks of an inhabitant of this city—and
A FRIEND OF THE POOR.
