Staunton Convention.
This small Convention of the Delegates of 18 Counties head their ticket with "Peace, Union, & Commerce and no Foreign Alliance," in staring Capitols. And do they expect to gull the people by this sort of language? We too are the friends of Peace; but of a Peace that is built on firm and honorable principles. We too are friends of commerce, on a large and liberal scale, commensurate with our rights and secure from future & growing aggression. We are the enemies of all Foreign Alliance, whether with Bonaparte or John Bull. We are devoted to the Union of these States, and we will defend it against the arts or the arms of their brethren in the East, who seek "its speedy and awful dissolution." because they cannot mount into the seats of power.
