Neither Gold Hill nor Virginia look very large to you when you are in the midst. Not that you by your presence make them look small; but there is no centre view that affords an adequate idea of the real importance, in population and business, of the places. But go up the narrow pathway that leads to the new Empire hoisting works, and when opposite the shaft-timber fitting shop, stop, turn, and behold. Gold Hill then presents to you the appearance of 'rushing times on Slippery Gulch.' You throw your vision across the road, and the face of nature that is mirrored on your retina is particularly suggestive of rough labor, and an eager toning down of Croesus croppings. Behold the long line of dwellings—every available foot on the main street for a mile, occupied by a house and the man-who-owns-it-or a mill and the men who run it. The sounds of labor strike your ear in pleasing harmony. All sorts. And the steam engine making quick and merry work, is heard in every direction. He does his own puffing and asks no odds. Go ahead. Go over the Divide. The best view of Virginia—to gather a correct idea of its size, capacity and workings—is obtained from the neighborhood of General Van Bokkelen's house. Go. You get the sweep, the bird's eye epitome, then and there, of Virginia city. It is not a small village, to-day. From the Chollar Potosi hoisting works along the ledge line until you read the 'Mexican's' sign, there are abundant evidences of prosperous mine working, and a populous city. We have often taken a walk in the directions pointed out, with citizens long residing in our communities, and they expressed great astonishment at finding from an outside glance, that they inhabited so large a village.
It's the best season for a trip to the top of Mount Davidson. The nightingale singers are coming, and you ought not to miss an audience to their notes. They will take their departure by or before the 1st of July. You can see how much of the country you desire to fence in by taking a trip up the Mount. Perhaps you will be satisfied with Judge Terry's boundaries, which are still marked by a float stone fence on the Southern side of the Mount.
